4th Annual Headwaters for Heroes Lake LBJ Fishing Tournament

This event was held Oct 23rd, 24th, and 25th in Kingsland, Texas. While we had expected 18 soldiers/veterans and their families, the weather held some back. We did have 11 soldiers/veterans in attendance despite the weather. The event kicked off with a BBQ meal consisting of wild hog, Nilgi, Oryx, and beef brisket, followed with the music of Justin Heflin and outdoor movies for the kids.

Saturday was a challenge to the anglers getting a very late start because of the rain. We had 6 ½” of rain that day but that did not hold anyone back. Thanks to Anna Wellman the kids had a busy fun packed day, the kids could have cared less about the rain they were having so much fun. They decorated pumpkins and had boat races with boats they built and much more. While the fishing was less than desirable on Saturday the participants enjoyed the opportunity to get out on the lake and relax. Our guides from the Hill Country Bass Club worked hard to find the fish, but more importantly have fun. The night finished off with the awards for the best decorated pumpkins, with our partners from the Kingsland HEB store doing the MC duties for the evening. We took time to honor the spouses of our brave soldiers/veterans at this event. After all it is the wives/spouses that are the glue that binds the family before, during, and after the stressful deployments. We finished with an awesome fish fry and music by Justin Heflin.

Sunday brought a different day with a front pushing through Saturday night and pushing the rain out, the guides and soldiers/veterans getting on the lake at safe light, and was it a good day. Everyone was catching fish, we now had a contest on our hands. We finished up with lunch and awards for 1st, 2nd , and 3rd place most fish caught. We also had the Asleep at the Reel award for the least amount of fish caught. This year we gave out awards to the top fishing guides.

But the time came and good buys were said, a lot of new friends were made, and we are already looking forward to next year’s 5th Annual Headwaters for Heroes Lake LBJ Fishing Tournament.
